One can always hope. But when has this ever NOT been true for a Microsoft operating system? Windows 95 ran poorly on computers released when 3.1 was out. Windows XP had compatibility issues with many Win 98 boxes. Etc, etc. This has always been true for them. The only difference now is how long XP has been out without being significantly updated.

Yep...and when has a new Windows OS that has issues with older hardware not prevented people from buying/upgrading to a new PC in order to run the new Windows...

The Shuffle has gone from being useful for music and data to just a music player. Given the new size, that's not the end of the world, but it no longer appeals to me.

Apple must be making killer profit on their new iPods. I can get a high speed 4GB USB flash drive for $80 retail. They must be paying half that for flash.

Well, for as little as has changed from 10.4 to 10.5, I'd put my bets on vista having more bugs.

That would be a safe bet, Vista is bound to have more bugs than Leopard. Then again, Apple tries to work out bugs before launching as OS, not after the release like M$. :D :)

Do you say the same to Apple about Hackintoshers?

Hackintoshers beat Apple? I wish I was going down the way Apple has been the past few years.

That being said, this is absolutely within Nokia's prerogative. Its just amazing that it has come to this. What worries me, however, is that all this is being driven by MS, to protect MS's interests, rather than to protect Nokia's interests.

New York – A lawless atmosphere often follows natural disasters. How has Japan managed to maintain order in the aftermath of last week's earthquake and tsunami?

The chaos and theft that have followed many earthquakes, hurricanes and tsunamis have been noticeably absent in the wake of Japan's 8.9-magnitude quake. Instead, people have formed long, orderly lines outside grocery stores, where employees try to fairly distribute limited supplies of food and water. "Looting simply does not take place in Japan," says Gregory Pflugfelder, an expert in Japanese culture at Columbia University, as quoted by CNN. "I'm not even sure if there's a word for it that is as clear in its implications as when we hear 'looting.'" How has Japan managed to avoid this common after-effect of disaster? (Watch an Al Jazeera report about the wreckage)

Discipline, discipline, discipline: "The Japanese are now reaping the fruits of having been taught, and drilled in, discipline and resilience since childhood," says Federico D. Pasqual Jr. at The Philippine Star. In grade school, lunch is free, but often "spartan," and kids learn to expect and deal with lean times. This unfathomable calamity is one of those times, and "the instilling of that value or attitude seems to be paying off."
    "Japanese discipline rules despite disaster"

The Japanese are no strangers to hardship: The easy answer is that the "legendary politeness" of the Japanese people is simply shining through, says Thomas Lifson at The American Thinker, but that's only part of what's happening. Japanese society has been honed over generations into a system "capable of ensuring order and good behavior." The country's "vast reservoir of social strength" carried it out of "the devastation of World War II," and, compared to that, "even the massive problems currently afflicting it" are "relatively small."
    "Why the Japanese aren't looting"

Japan isn't superior, just different: Japanese people are "taught that conformity and consensus are virtues," says James Picht at The Washington Times. To Americans, who prize individualism, "those virtues sound almost offensive." In normal times, "concerns about appearance and obligation" may be stifling, but in adversity they may be what trumps "the urge to smash and grab." Japanese culture isn't "superior," it's just "well suited to maintaining public order immediately after a major disaster."yahoo news (http://news.yahoo.com/s/theweek/213154;_ylt=Aier3ZBx0et3Y1K_YS0GBTFvaA8F;_ylu=X3oDMTE3N240aWVoBHBvcwM4BHNlYwN5bl90b21ic3RvbmUEc2xrA2 Z1bGxuYnNwc3Rvcg--)

Android is not a consistent platform. A huge chunk of that "market share" is running 1.6 and is not compatible with anything in the Market.

It would seem like that would be true, wouldn't it? But it's not.

There are a lot of apps compiled to be compatible back to 1.6 that are usable by the third world tablets you're apparently talking about. If an app doesn't need newer API features, and many apps don't, a dev's not going to limit their audience by needlessly marking it for a later version. That goes for both iOS and Android.

Of the tablets and phones made by members of the Open Handset Alliance that do have Market access built-in, 94% are on version 2.x.

Also note that when Google says there are over 350,000 Android activations each day, that's only for devices that use Google Services. Which leaves out all those ~$100 tablets you're referring to.

These comparison of a single device against a loose collection of largely incompatible devices is growing tiresome.

Not sure they're any more "incompatible" than an iPhone 4 running the latest iOS and an original iPhone running 3.x or older. At least all the Android devices support multitasking.

I made no mistakes. There is not a phone in the world that sold more then (sic) the Phone.

Which iPhone? There have been four distinct models. As for best selling phones (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_mobile_phones):

    Nokia 1100 .........(250 million)
    Nokia 3210 .........(150 million)
    Motorola RAZR V3 ...(130 million)
    Nokia 3310/3330 ... (126 million)
    iPhone 4 ...........( 30 million)
    iPhone 3GS......... ( 30 million)
    Samsung S5230 .... ( 30 million)
    Nokia 2100 .........( 20 million)
    iPhone 3G ..........( 15 million)
    LG Chocolate .......( 15 million)

The original iPhone is down around 25th in that list, well below the Samsung Galaxy S, Blackberry Pearl, et al.

Still and all, it's done amazingly well. Congrats to Apple.

I would say it's pretty simple. The wests power and wealth mainly relies on Oil, which is drying up. No?

There's an old notion that we are in the "Atomic Age", but I think you kind of hit the bullseye in that we are really in the "Fossil Age". Although literraly, Stone, Copper, Bronze, Iron, were part of our tools and weapons, a Nuclear bomb and reactor is not really a big part of our lifestyle today, while fossil fuels play a much bigger role in nearly all our present day "tools and weapons". Perhaps we will enter the "Atomic Age" eventually when we discover the fusion reactor and practical batteries or something, but until then, the competition for oil will determines who's the boss. :)

What I can't wrap my head around is the sheer gullibility of not only the authors of this site, but so many of the frequent readers.

Do any of you possess short term memory? At all?

What has happened for the last 4 years in a row? With no lapse, no change, no variation whatsoever. iPhone is released in mid to late June. Once July.

...You'd have to be pretty deluded, and cracked out on the rumor mill, to think any other other iPhone 5 @ WWDC, release 2-3 weeks after.

What evidence has anyone seen to the contrary? Besides ****ing zero?

It's one thing to not believe a rumor - it's another to post something like this. Be prepared to be called out if you end up being wrong.

Now, if it's a history lesson you want, I'll be happy to oblige you. For the previous two versions, Apple has held an event before WWDC to preview the next version of iOS about 3 months before it was released. The new iPhone has always been launched with the new version of iOS in June(/July). That's three historical precedents:

    1) iOS is previewed 3 months in advance.
    2) The new iPhone is launched with the new OS.
    3) The iPhone is launched in June.

There's no such preview event this year. iOS 5 will be unveiled at WWDC - that's confirmed. Any way you look at it, history will be broken. Therefore, predicting what will happen this year based upon Apple's pattern has no more merit than any of the rumors.

Logically, it would make sense that iOS 5, being previewed at WWDC, is launched about three months later with the new iPhone in late August or early September. Historically, that jives with the timing of the preview/launch of iOS as well as the launches of iOS and the new iPhone coinciding. Obviously, that breaks from the pattern of releasing the new iPhone in June. That idea is supported, however, by multiple rumors of both a September iPhone launch and no hardware announcement at WWDC.

The rumors of a delayed iPhone launch, in turn, are supported by other rumors as to why it would be delayed: 4G, supply constraints out of Japan, or even related to a redesign or capacity bump.

Agreed. Sony had the vaio x that was partially made out of carbon fiber, 11" 1.5 lb. The 11" MBA is 2.3. If Apple wants to cut on weight, liquid metal is the way, especially since they are the only one who can use it in consumer electronics. The thing has a yield strength 25 times higher than aluminium  . Injectable and recyclable. Price will be the main factor for liquidmetal, it's made primarily of zirconium, which isn't cheap.

Not cheap for most but knowing apple they can create the demand that will push the price down just look at screens. also they do have a good price point where they are not competing for the bottom of the barrel prices so I can see them making it work.
Liquid metal is where the future is for apple, please! :D

"Awesome" indeed. Incase Apple doesn't put anything up soon enough, this is what I've gleaning from Twitter. (No vouching for accuracy.)

Available June, $299 from App Store. Uncertainty as to whether other apps in suite are being sold separately or if they've gone the way of the Dodo.

Rebuilt from scratch. 64-bit, OpenCL, Grand Dispatch, Core Animation, Cocoa. Background rendering. Uses all CPUs.

Built for Snow Leopard. Scales to hardware. New, darker interface.

    No transcoding.

Colour-managed. Resolution independence to 4K. Floating point linear.

Does lots of stuff on ingest. Image stabilisation, rolling shutter correction, audio NR, auto colour balance. Auto-detects people and shot type (long, med, CU). Non-destructively.

Big emphasis on metadata and keyword tagging.

Magnetic Timeline not sure exactly what this is from descriptions, but seems to be a new way to move stuff around on timeline. Compound Clips sounds like intelligent nesting. Inline Precision Editor for roll, slip, ripple, allows you to see outside of cut easily. Auditioning allows you to collect all your options for assembly and choose preferred later. Timeline Index.

Browser and viewer may have combined. Timeline tracks appear and disappear as needed. Can use keyboard for all functions.

One-click colour matching between clips. Retime by dragging. PluralEyes-like waveform-based autosync. Sample-accurate audio editing. Audio waveforms change in realtime.

    Lots of questions remain...

Are you as old as Helen? Have you seen that she has seen?

Just because she speaks of Jewish influence in Washington, does not automatically make her anti-Semitic. Sorry to burst your self-created bubble.

Sounds like you just created a bubble yourself. Care to point out where I stated any of that? Or were you just making an assumption?

If you need to hear my opinion on the Jewish/ Israeli Lobby; Yes, I completely agree that it is a powerful force. However, that's not focus of the story.

There can be no question that undue influence (given the weight of Jewish voters) has been going on for years.

There can also be no question that one who reports the news needs to remain relatively objective. I could give a damn what she says in private but when one starts expressing their opinion in a profession such a journalism, you lose all credibility to report a story without undue bias.

Anti-Semitism is generally quite swiftly and harshly dealt with in this country (and rightly so). It's a shame such an attitude towards prejudice is not more evenly applied when it comes to other groups.

I think Israel deserves quite a lot of criticism, as does the pro-Israeli lobby. Criticism of these two entities is not tantamount to anti-Semitism. Also, much what Thomas says echoes sentiments being expressed accross the Middle East on a daily basis. She is Lebanese, and Israel's track record with Lebanon is pretty shameful. Right or wrong, this stuff is not necessarily coming out of the blue. With that being said, some of Thomas' statements and language came across as very reckless at best.

    I completely agree.

I have no problem with her expressing her opinion/ point of view but with her (former) standing, she could probably wrangle a ton of op-ed space/ television interviews to voice her concerns in a tactful manner.

better display than the OEMs. That counts.

Last time I checked, the display is not included in the Mac Pro. I would also claim that the ACD isn't that great and Apple only offers one option. For example Dell offers various displays of many sizes, including U2711 which uses the exactly same panel as the 27" ACD.

Let's see: Safari, Mail, Bento, Keynote, Pages, Numbers, iTunes, iLife and many more. You might as well claim that Microsoft doesn't make much in the way of software.

Internet Explorer, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Windows Media Center/Player...

Pulling up the software card is always moot. If you need a software that is Mac only, then Mac is your only option but that is only you, so claiming that a Mac is better in general isn't fair.

If we get back to the original point, yes, the SP Mac Pro is still overpriced compared to its competitors. However, the extra price can be justified if your needs are driven by OS X. On the other hand, if one uses no OS X only software, then it can be hard to justify the big premium.

What about if applecare is sending you a new MB to replace an old defective ibook? You didn't buy it, so you don't have a receipt. Could you exchange it for a C2D?

I don't have a lot of experience with this directly, but I'm going to guess that you can't.

Don't be too greedy, you're already upgrading from an iBook to a MB. You did pretty well.

getting the option to rent movies on itunes will be great. hell even to rent with a burn to disc option would be even better.

Burn to DVD would definitely be a nice option, but I usually just hook my iPod to my TV (http://podophile.com/2006/08/16/watch-ipod-videos-on-your-tv/) with the $19 AV cable. I wouldn't be too surprised if Apple initially pushes this option over DVD burning.

The only downside would be that an offline navigation system requiring only a GPS signal would require GB's of maps data to be stored on the phone. A sacrifice that a lot of people aren't willing to make. Especially people with the 16GB models. Otherwise, without an internet connection, you will just appear as a dot on a map full of gray squares. That's the reason Apple chose google maps in the first place. When they first introduced the iPhone, there would be no plausible way to store maps on a phone with only 4/8GB of storage.

Yes but if you enter an appointment in iCal then the system could cache the required data before you leave wifi range. Most your adhoc travel is going to be your home city right. So it could have a cache of your home city in high detail in a couple of hundred Meg right?

Sure if you where doing a couple months of travel it might need lots of space but day to day it shouldn't need much.
