If you are going for 2TB drives, the WD Caviar Green drives are among the favorites. It's been reported they have some issues regarding the high load cycle counts (http://www.google.com/#hl=en&sugexp=ldymls&xhr=t&q=WD%20caviar%20green%20high%20load%20cycle%20count&cp=10&pq=wd%20green%20high%20load%20cycle%20count&pf=p&sclient=psy&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=WD+caviar+green+high+load+cycle+count&pbx=1&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.&fp=6cbe03e6833a46ef) due to the firmware...
I personally like the Samsung F4 (http://www.google.com/#sclient=psy&hl=en&biw=1071&bih=1031&tbm=shop&q=samsung+spinpoint+2TB&aq=f&aqi=g1&aql=&oq=&pbx=1&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.&fp=2c1304d622775efd) drives. IME they are faster, low power and very quiet - and a bit less expensive.
But either way, you can't go wrong with any of them - or any major brand high capacity drive for that matter. You'll find opinions in every direction. All drives fail sooner or later, and all of them are subject to DOAs. All of them offer fairly good customer service, depending where you buy.

So i got this iMac off eBay for just 2.15! It's a tangerine model with a 10 gig HD and 160 mb RAM, running 10.3.9. Actually came with Word for mac installed. Gonna get a usb dongle to get it on the web. My only complaint is that I can't sync my iPhone.
:eek:that's the exact same spec (but i had a 6gig hdd) that my first imac was but i paid 25

I visited the Apple Store in Westfield White City yesterday (5th August 2010) to find out about and purchase an ipad. Once I had found an assistant to help me (the very excellent Dan), I was happy but my initial experience on entering the store was not a happy one. There were a number of people milling around but it was not overly crowded. Despite that, I was left for a while to stand aimlessly. After a few minutes a very bright and breezy female assistant approached me and helped with a technical query I had concerning my iphone. I then asked about ipads and she promised to find an assistant for me. She found Dan who was already serving a customer. Unfortunately he then disappeared. I waited....and waited....and waited and eventually had to make what I can only describe as a "public announcement" to all and sundry that I'd appreciate some help and that "I don't bite" :)
By this time I was pretty annoyed.
Eventually Dan helped me - he was really excellent and as a result I purchased a 32MB ipad which I am finding really great!
32mb is pretty small storage space :P

I don't know specifically about the jailbreak but I'm guessing that if you go in to the Apple store for your broken home button, they will give you a different phone (refurb).
That may make this a moot question.
When the guy goes to get your new phone just say "hey man can you do me a favor? No 5K?". He'll get it. Worked for me last night. Got a nie new non-refurb phone.

This is a far cry from what the previous images had me thinking - this reminds me of a PDA or that Treo phone - maybe it is for the iPhone and not the iPod video...

I was working the early shift at Sydney International Airport that day. On the shuttle bus to the airport the radio announcer said a plane had flown into a building in New York, we all laughed because we thought he must have gotten his information wrong.
When we arrived at the airport there on the screens was the event unfolding, much to our horror. I recall as the morning progressed the news was being broadcast on all the TV's around the terminal. Everyone was sitting around looking pasty faced and flights were systematically being cancelled. No-one (workers or passengers) were speaking, it was surreal. However all the oriental passengers were buzzing around, shopping, eating and joking. For them it was an opportunity to shop unimpeded. It was like they didn't see the screens around them. Occasionally they'd look up and then would go on with what they were doing.

Like many of you I have installed an SSD as my main boot drive with a spinning disc for large file storage.
I am experiencing some issues on how to organize my files.
I want to keep documents, downloads etc on my SSD. I want to move my music, pictures and movies folders to my HDD. THe problem is my mac won't let me delete the music, pictures, movies folder on my SSD saying OSX needs it.
How do I convince OSX that those folders will be in my other drive from now on?
I guess I could move my hole home folder and make new "documents" and "downloads" on my SSD but I am looking for a more elegant solution.
thanks in advance.
P.S. also microsoft word updates wont work, gets stuck looking at both HDs and won't let me choose one for installation. what is going on there?

Growth stocks don't generally pay dividends. Dividend paying stocks are a safety move, trading dividends for share price growth, and are meant to attract investors. Apple doesn't need to do that.
Be happy with the insane growth.It has a 315 billion market cap, it's not "growing" to $1 trillion, sorry. Apple is a mature company.

Just a few minutes ago on BreakfastTV - Toronto, they said there were rumours going around that iPhone Canada will be announced today in SJ's keynote.
Not heard of this rumour before but this morning.
Thoughts?
Could make sense - and source of the rumour might have some credibility now that CityTV is owned by Rogers...
I'm still waiting for the CDMA version though!

Giving my '08 Mac Pro a new lease of life with a SSD. 3'5 (so I won't have to worry about sleds etc.) I'm going for a clean install, but is there any special considerations regarding formatting I should be aware of?
This is the drive;
OCZ Vertex 2E Bigfoot 120GB 3.5" SATA-II
Should I install in windows first to update firmware?
EDII read this post which has got me thinking it going to be difficult

This would be stealing, as my contract obliges me to continue paying for the cost of the hardware, which really isn't paid for, when I first get the phone. I agree with the others however, that AT&T should unlock the phone, once the contract is up, or that Apple should offer an unlocked phone, albeit at a higher price. I am thinking of expat pilots who live in the UAE flying for an international carrier for 20 days and then get to come back stateside for 10. They really need a solution like that. The next thing that AT&T should do, then, is have a different pricing structure for those with legitimately unlocked phones. After all, that phone didn't cost AT&T a dime.
In what way could you possibly define this as stealing? As you say, your contract is what obligates you to continue paying. Having an unlocked iPhone doesn't magically make your contract disappear. You still have to keep paying AT&T. It does allow you to use your personal property to do business with another carrier, if you choose, but you will still be paying AT&T. The fact that the lock is only in place to keep you from doing business, using your personal property, with another carrier, would be called restraint of trade in any other industry and would itself be illegal. Why is it legal in the wireless industry?

Yay! One I know the answer to! :D
And, to make this post slightly more worthwhile, what was Mr Anderson's old username?
Blackspot was the other Admin, he did most of the story approving.
I believe it was Blakespot, not Blackspot.

Finally the last time i switched i did a search to see which companies had the least complaints. Although the billing practices overall in the industry
are atrocious, i've had the best experience overall with my current carrier.
This trumps any pleasure i would get from having a phone that integrates
well with my macs.
Sorry, I gotta ask though...

On first glance so much for one handed navigation. I hope there is more to it then this. :(
How about we reserve our comments on usability, interface and one-handed-ness until we see a demo... or a freaking production model for that matter.
sheesh. You all talk like you've used it.

P.S. SiliconAddict: the above comments are not made solely at you.

huh?
Why pay $200 to some skecthy website, when you can go to Walmart and pay $200 for the Nokia E71 Straight Talk.
Why would I pay $200 for a phone that doesn't work?

Using GSP and Iphoto only makes sense if the photo's have the GSP location information as part of the photo. So that mean that the Camera taking the picture has a GSP reciever in it, which is great outside, but GPS does not work indoors
1. The GPS receiver could cache the last known (outdoor) position and use that in the meta tags for the photo.
2. Folks are working on getting GPS to work indoors on a small chip: see <http://www.gpsworld.com/gpsworld/article/articleDetail.jsp?id=3053> especially this paragraph:
In the Taylor system, the GPS receiver is relieved of the burden of searching out the satellite frequencies, demodulating satellite navigation data, and computing satellite coordinates, because this information is provided over a separate wireless link. Of course, in the cell phone environment, a separate wireless link is readily available. Over the last few years, cellular handset makers such as Ericsson, Motorola, Nokia, and Qualcomm cooperated in the adoption of standard formats for A-GPS information interchange. We now have A-GPS standards for GSM, CDMA, and US-TDMA wireless technologies.

Drop resistance is important for me. A drop will happen eventually onto a hard surface, I want to make sure it does not affect my phone at all.
It would need to be sleek though and not too thick.
How is the otterbox commuter?
This is IMO but I think the best combo of thinness and drop protection would be the Speck Pixelskin HD. I would've recommended an Incase Slider but the entire case is thin but it is hard plastic which would either break your iPhones glass or just completely knick up the case.
Since the Pixelskin HD is TPU, it remains thin and it's a nice material for drops and it would absorb the shock MUCH better. And the drop won't show up on the case since it's so solid. So you won't have to ever replace it with a new one.
If I had to throw ALL my cases away and only pick one--just for aesthetics, protection ane thinness--I'd keep the Pixelskin HD.

Nope. You'll have to use a server-side scripting language to add a class to the link for the current page, or manually add it to the appropriate link in the HTML on each page.
a:active doesn't do what you think it does. It only comes into play as the link is clicked.
a {
text-decoration:none;

a:hover, a.current { // <- This will give your :hover pseudo class
color:#FFF; // and .current class the same appearance
background-color:#21B9FF;
}

Not to rain on your parade but there will never be a game that requires 3D for the 3DS. It will always be optional because not everyone can use it/see it or at the very least can play it for as long before they are fatigued. Game designers probably won't be too keen to limit their market like that for something that would work just as well as a 2D game.
That was kinda my point... I don't know how well the 3Ds will do and if it is successful it isn't going to be because of the 3D. For the 3D to really have much affect I think on making a game player successful, it would have to be part of the experience, not just an add on to make the game prettier. And I think I mentioned I don't think they can do that with 3D (and not cause not everyone can see it, but because I'm not sure what you would really *need* 3D in order to play a game. Unless it was stuff like look behind boxes but I am pretty sure the 3D implemented in the 3Ds isn't capable of doing stuff like that).
As far as iOS gaming and the virtual joystick kludge, I agree. It is like how in some very early console games/programs you had a full on mouse cursor that you controlled with the D-pad. How long did it take them to figure out that was a horrible idea? You have to design for the device, and not many developers are doing it (great examples of how not to do it are the various RPGs with maybe the exception of Battleheart but even that is a bit clunky). Personally, I hope someone ports a game like Aquaria or Ocarina of Time because I think touch based gaming is much better at music than console or keyboard & mouse because it can just give you a keyboard or some other simulation.
I don't know if I said *that* more than I don't think the ipad will make up for lack of buttons to have some advantage over consoles.
I have played joystick games on the iphone and I still enjoy them. Sure, they would be better on another console, but just my own selfish reasons i don't really want to be stuck with just angry bird type games on my iphone. But, so far, I haven't had to. I've found plenty of good rpgs (though honestly for turn based ones I don't think you need buttons to play them, in some ways touch screen is nicer. Instead of having to scroll through a list to pick who you want to fight or what action you want to take, you just tap it) and racing games. And even enjoy the Prince of Persia and Assassin's creed port (both use virtual sticks). The virtual controls are more clunky than a dpad (or even better, a joystick) but they don't make the game unfun to me :). So I personally would vote to still get games that use joysticks as well, even if they have to use a virtual joystick.
Though I suppose if you were to make a game kinda like the for the iphone, you could probably implement some way that you use the iphone's strengths instead as controls.
