What an incredibly misguided law. I can't believe a western country in the 21st century could not only have such a law, but instantiate and enforce!

I get a kick out of reading these types of forums. The "my import is so much better than your domestic" types are really just a bunch of poseurs. Several years ago I owned a bar and I had a standing bet that no one could pick their brand out of a six glass line up. I had to pay a guy once, but I think he got a lucky guess, 1 out of 6, the odds are that someone will guess correctly. To me, beer is beer. Golf and hanging out at the lake are about the only time I drink beer anyway. My drink of choice is whiskey, Jack Daniel's Tennessee Sippin whiskey neat to be specific. Anyone who mixes good whiskey with ANYTHING should be put to death on the spot. Mix with blends, not the good stuff. And for those of you who don't know, Jack Daniel's IS NOT BOURBON. Never has been, never will be. So all you folks quit calling it bourbon.

Hey, slightly OT, but does it make sense to anyone else that it should be possible to tell the laptops to shut down, then close the lid and not have them go to sleep halfway through the shutdown process?

yes. i agree. sucks. have to live with it i guess is what macs will say.

Sounds ok, but I'm getting more/more turned off by any MS products. I'll upgrade to SP1 for Word/Excel. I'll continue to use Mail and iCal for Exchange access. Entourage and Outlook 2011 are bloated, and buggy [IMO], and not worth the problems.

When android phones are literally being given away, what is the surprise with the 'surge'? One system is popular because people want it, but the other will eventually surpass it because its an open system on many different phone platforms that are often included for "free".

    1. So Google being smart about Android distribution is wrong?
    2. You can get an iPhone 3Gs for free in many place, as well as $49.

Showing how Android is surging ahead is meant to show which OS is winning, but often (as is the case with this report, I believe) they are only looking at phone sales. Because iOS runs on iPads and iPods, Apple's share is higher. I wish we could get more concrete evidence on this.

    P-Worm

True, but the biggest problem is that (from what I recall working at Apple and many posts on the forums) Apple counts shipping units as units sold, as well as units solely sold for replacement.

e.g. A user getting his/her iPhone replaced will be given a free iPhone, but Apple counts that as a "sold" unit in their inventory.

What these numbers do show me though is that not too many people really care about talking and surfing the web at the same time. Making one of AT&T's biggest advantages moot.

Geez it must be fun being an Apple employee. Everytime I go to the Apple store it really does seem like such a fun place to work ;).

Foxconn is a contractor for Apple. They are not Apple employees. Foxconn makes a ton of parts for a number of manufacturers, including Apple. They also make their own name-branded parts as well.

Foxconn, not Apple, are the ones who went after the leak and pursued them to be arrested. Apple is a very large client of Foxconn's, so that's why they want to make sure they keep Apple happy by keeping leaks to a minimum. So if anyone thinks this too "harsh" of punishment, they need to blame Foxconn, not Apple.

From what I've seen of it on cars, carbon fiber is quite susceptible to scratching, and scratches can look very prominent. Not sure it would make such a great enclosure material. True, it would be better for WiFi transmission, but it would also keep more heat in. Possibly a replacement for plastic, but IMO not a replacement for unibody aluminum.

I'm glad they've added OpenCL support so that I can transition my hardware over slowly instead of plunking down for Resolve+2 nVidia cards right away.
Might want to hold off on that plan.
    CreativeCOW (http://forums.creativecow.net/thread/277/5507)

Hi all, when we release 8.0 in June we will have an updated config guide and a number of these questions will be clearer then.

OpenCL is GPU based, not cpu, and in the iMac and Macbook Pro configs we demonstrated at NAB we used the one on-board ATI GPU. If you are building a MacPro, you can continue to use the ATI cards BMD have previously identified for the UI GPU, but for image processing the Nvidia Quadro 4000 with CUDA is still the performance GPU for image processing.

The NR is only available on CUDA so its likely users will want at least one CUDA GPU for the image processing to get this amazing feature.
    Peter

While I see all these complaints Apple is not into Pro software & Machines, I think this is a good decision by Apple to compete in the professional market.
It is a good business decision by Apple but, at least at first blush, it looks like Apple is expanding by going down instead of up and that's part of the source of concern and disappointment from many current users.

    Lethal

erg not really. you do only have 2 holes in your head as you say, but your hearing is more advanced than that. your brain always factors in all the other elements, like your head position, so your brain notices and calculates the volumes of incoming sounds, so you can distinguish where things are in relation to you. obviously, your brain can't do that with headphones.

Look up Binaural sound. Sound these days can be mixed in such a way that, when output through a nice set of headphones, the effect is completely 3-dimensional. The sound technicians do all the fun stuff for you.

It's really impressive, honestly. I've played with it a bit. Almost too real.

My one and only hope for 10.7 is that Apple FINALLY brings OS X up to par with Windows when it comes to connecting--and staying connected--to network shares.

I've said this so many times but it has yet to materialize: OS X needs something more robust, similar to Window's drive mappings. I know we all love to look down our noses at how Windows still uses that anachronistic drive mapping system but here's the deal--it STILL blows OS X's approach out of the water.

Typical OS X user experience is this: I mount a network share. I work through the day but if there's any significant network connectivity issue, my mount point goes away and OS X alerts me that the network share is no longer available and I have to reconnect. IOW, OS X suddenly turns helpless on me and my mounted share just disappears because it's too dumb to know what else to do.

On Windows, you create static mount points (those drive mappings) that persist even when the connection is lost. If you have lost the connection and you (or a program) tries to access that mapped share, the OS automatically reconnects--completely transparently--and carries on as if nothing happened. Ironically, this is more Mac-like than the Mac.

Anyone who has gone through the experience of automating tasks on OS X, assuming the presence of a persistent connection to a given share, knows what kind of torment this can be. And it's really such a basic thing. Stay connected, and if you lose the connection, try to reconnect if a program or person tries to access it. Why can't we have that? It works great on Windows.

Fortunately, I've discovered how to make automounts on OS X which persist somewhat in the way I've described above but that functionality is buried down deep in the Unix internals of OS X and requires some serious geek cred to get working. Apple has yet to put a decent user interface on it.

I hope that arrives in 10.7. That's all I ask for. The rest will be icing on the cake.

Prior to my first Mac experience almost 3 years ago now, I was in the Windows / Linux / PC world. Quite frankly, the Windows networks that functioned the best were the ones with at least one PC running Linux. That is, unless you were willing to run Windows server products. Otherwise, Windows networking and/or drive mappings could stop working at any time, and for no apparent reason. Any amount of research pointed to solutions, which might work one time, but not the next.

Things like that kept me busy.

Now, I almost don't know what to do with my free time!

By the way Thunderbolt is the high speed transfer highway of the future ... not SATA111, USB3.0 or the like.

But the boot drive still runs off of SATA, not TB. That boot drive can be one that is faster than SATA II can handle. There's really no reason not to update those busses to SATA III, pc's have had it for a while and even the last Macbook update upgraded that.

It think what many of us feel (most of us?) is that iCal's a little useless without being integrated into Mail. Having to shuttle back and forth is inefficient. The little "shortcuts" (hacks) that Apple seems to be using make it even more annoying in my opinion. They don't want to go head to head with entourage, I get it, but until you do, iCal gets deleted from my machine.
I disagree. I like how its seperate. What could you possibly need to sync between Mail and iCal anyways..... Event invties... ohh wait that works. I believe its better to have 3 seperate programs instead of entourage... that way you can be more efficient with your use. Like for instance, when I use my laptop in class I close Mail... cause I don't have Internet, but I still need iCal. So its perfect. I mean the only downside is that you have to click to open two apps. I don't see anything else. WHat can you integrate between the two other than contacts which is its own program.

I think its perfect how it is. I would love to see new features, new features are always great; I just can't think of any. Ohh I know one. Making things in iCal have links to documents so if a To-Do is to like finish a project.. u can link to the files so its all there, due date, importance, notes, location of files. And maybe they could work on the calendars (categories). Smart calendars would be nice. And more flexibility with calendars. I don't really see any other problems. I'm sure there are I'm just not that good at looking.

Another question based on a difference I see to Katrina - why am I not seeing any animals? After Katrina there were lots of rescued/abandoned dogs etc. Are pets not so prevalent in Japan?

And a lingual question - why the use of the word 'prefecture' all the time? As in Chiba prefecture, why not just Chiba? Isn't it unecessary, like saying 'Caifornia state' or 'Los Angeles city/county' all the time?

PS. I didn't see USA right at the top the chart at first. Maybe a big arrow to point it out. Anyway, how is Finland and Sweden etc healthier than Australia and Greece, do they not get more colds and flus than we in warmer countries?
